VOIP is an acronym for Voice Over Internet Protocol, or in more common terms phone service over the internet. If you have a reasonable quality Internet connection you can get phone service delivered through your Internet connection instead of from your local phone company and you can make a telephone call to anyone in the world. The phone you are calling does not need to have VoIP. Generally the cost of using VoIP is less than your local telephone company, and you can keep your existing phone number or pick a new one with an area code anywhere in your country.


  • Before signing up for VoIP service it is always advisable to perform a VoIP test. This tests your broadband internet connection speed, but also tests for jitter and latency which are key VoIP parameters for determining the quality of your phone calls. Sometimes VoIP providers will get criticized for call quality when in actual fact the problem is due to your Internet connection.
  • In the event of a power failure or an interruption in your broadband service, you will lose the use of your VoIP service for the duration of the service outage. You may be able to avoid an interruption during a power failure by using an uninterrupted power supply, provided that your broadband provider's equipment is also protected against power failures.
