WHAT IS FIBRE AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
An optical fibre is a highly transparent strand of glass as thin as a human hair. The light in a fibre-optic cable travels through the core by a principle called total internal reflection. Because the cladding does not absorb any light from the core, the light wave can travel great distances at the speed of light.
Fibre to the business (FTTB) is the delivery of a communications signal over optical fibre from the operator's switching equipment all the way to a business and/or office park, thereby adding an alternative to existing copper infrastructure such as telephone wires. Fibre to the business is a relatively new and fast-growing method of providing vastly higher (up to 250 times faster) and more reliable bandwidth to consumers, and thereby enabling more robust data, voice and video services demanded by today's customers. Fibre to the Business normally uses Active Ethernet fibre technology offering businesses dedicated fibres for unlimited internet bandwidth.
WHY IS FIBRE BETTER?
Fibre is greener and fibre is also more durable than copper and will last longer. The raw materials to make them are plentiful (silicon from sand!) whereas copper supplies are dwindling. Fibre is clearer and fibre won't lose the signal the way copper does and because light signals don't interfere with other fibres in the same cable, you get clearer conversations. As it's not an electrical conductor it is not susceptible to lightning strikes or electrical interference hence increased availability. Fibre has no 'street value' like copper cables hence it is not susceptible to theft. Future smart homes and businesses will require fast reliable broadband and fibre supports a host of new services.
WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH FTTB?
When broadband comes to you via fibre optic cable rather than regular copper telephone wires, it gives you more bandwidth, so everyone can do their thing online at the same time. Say goodbye to buffering, FOREVER!
SO HOW FAST IS FAST?
Up to 10Gbps (10 000Mbps) broadband connection makes light work of even the heftiest downloads
Rolling out a fibre network makes it possible for CCTV camera's (Infra-red and Thermal) to be placed throughout the community. CCTV cameras are known to reduce crime and can play a significant role in improving the overall security in the areas they cover.
With fibre the high quality live feeds from the CCTV cameras are taken back to a central location via the fibre network. The live feeds enable appointed security providers to offer live monitoring of the areas covered as well as other services such as number plate and facial recognition.
BENEFITS OF FTTB WHICH LANDLORS CAN TAP INTO
Improves the Landlords value proposition to its tenants having access to world class fibre at a fraction of the cost of procuring the fibre infrastructure themselves. Studies performed by the Fibre council of the USA show that Fibre infrastructure increased the value of each individual office by approximately R70, 000.00 due to service stability and increased bandwidth.
